Someone got intel from that reverend bloke about a heart at the center of the house. Literal one. Said it controls the barriers, and if you hurt it, the boundaries'll lift.
So they set the heart on fire. Not the house. Woke up to the house burning like the rest of us
( if buffy wasn’t so sure spike would own up to something like this, she’d probably guess he’s covering his own ass right now. since he isn’t — she tries to run down a mental list of who he associates with. gale, jinx, set, alina maybe? nobody who seems like they wouldn’t just own up to it themselves. like attracts like and all that. )
how’d they contact that creepo? are they still talking to him? he wasn’t exactly giving me the warm and fuzzies. i wouldn’t trust him. i wouldn’t trust a heart in the house either. that’s like gross. and creepy i’ll see if giles has ever heard of something like that
spike if you want me to protect this person, i need to know who it is
Dunno when she talked to him. But I don't think they're still talking.
Don't trust the reverend either, at least as far as his agenda goes. But if burning the heart burnt the house...seems probable it could damage the boundaries, too.
[ He deliberates a moment, because he did trust Buffy when he talked to Nat about this. Now everything's just--turmoil inside him, love and loathing both.
Spike knows she won't go blabbing on the network, though, or get too many people involved who don't need to be. He feels sour about the thought of Giles and Riley getting looped in, but it's too late now. ]
Her name's Nat. Don't know if you've met her. She and her boyfriend laid low in the crypt for a bit a while back.
Don't go grilling her for more intel. She doesn't deserve the third degree.
( a couple of awkward bump ins at the crypt — several uncomfortable feelings following that realization, weird memories of saying oh, i'm just borrowing a cup of milk and i'm not here to solicit sex and/or attention from the evil vampire who doesn't drink milk. darn looks like he's fresh out, okay bye now! and so on. )
ask her how she contacted him in the first place. if we can, we have to figure out how he knows about all this. or why he'd want the boundaries down in the first place. either way it's fishy.
anyway, if we're supposed to take that the house is alive from all this that's pretty ( questionable from a moral standpoint, maybe?? ) yucky. and edgar allan poeish
[ this is the man who made a whole-ass robot of you. there is no shame ]
What's it say about you, that you get drenched for the scum of the earth? That no one but the scum of the earth can keep up with the insatiable Slayer?
( what's it say about her? she's scum too, obviously. it's either that or she's better than everyone else — two split opinions she oscillates wildly between, depending on whatever hurts most at any particular moment. )
it doesn't say anything, because it doesn't mean anything. just stop.
i don’t sleep at night. haven’t you noticed that? i’m just going between one moment and the next. and yes, i used you as a distraction. i didn’t exactly hear you complaining
you know where we fall. i’m the slayer, you’re william the bloody. you kill slayers. i kill vampires. the end.
( i already do, she thinks. that's the whole problem. )
you mean like what if i knew you when you were human?
( there's only one vampire she knows with a soul — spike isn't him. thinking like this is just asking for heartache, anyway. (which, ironically, shouldn't be there in the first place.) )
that ship already sailed, spike. you haven't forgotten drusilla.
[ He knows he's walking a fool's path, knows she won't give him anything and knows she's slamming every door shut as he steps up to the threshold. But Spike feels desperate, has to find the one angle where Buffy will invite him in. ]
( the bottom line: she doesn't know how to. having a soul won't change all the things he did while he was void of one — the same way all those things can't stop buffy from wanting him, even needing him sometimes. the soul isn't exactly the issue, it's how spike makes her feel. it's what he does to her. it's how she responds to it. it's — wrong, she thinks. august and gale were wrong. something is wrong with her, demonically wrong, because this can't possibly be right. )
[ Spike wants to grab her by the shoulders, beg her not to call him that. Beg her to kill him, end him, love him. Treat him like a man instead of a thing, treat him like a thing so he doesn't have to care about all the ways he's wronged her. All the ways he tries to do better and comes up short, because he'll never be good.

Haven't been out to the boundaries yet, but we should scout them.

Dunno if it burned down fully or what. Or if there are conditions you have to meet to find it, like some of the weirder rooms in this place.

( — don't invite yourself to her patrolling 💢 )
i'll grab riley and check it out. you watch over nat.
and i'll see what giles says. maybe there's some housey shaped demon he knows about
like baba yaga or something

You see any chicken feet on this mansion? It's not Baba bloody Yaga, Buffy

what, are you jealous?
well i didn't see a heart either. i'm keeping my expectations low and my mind open.

Doesn't change anything. You'll still treat like I'm scum of the earth until you need a fix or a heavy hitter.

You might've believed in the black-and-white of it all when we first met, Buffy. So did I.
But parroting it now? You're fooling yourself.
I love you. Can't stop loving you. And some part of you knows you belong in the dark with me.
