( her instinctual drive is to pretend like she isn't upset, still — buffy coping mechanisms, and other ways of dealing with inevitable departures, be it stake, cancer, or the whims of the universe. so what, if they were finally in a kind of good spot. so what if she changed her behaviors just for him to leave. it's a good reminder not to change, maybe — things almost never swing her way.

except for august, obviously. a good guy. not just anyone would say they're sorry spike left — particularly when spike was such a brat to them. )

[it's the least he can do. august has seen buffy act out in the face of danger and grief– werewolf was probably the worst example of it, but he understood more of her then than he did when she came to him and gale for help. that was her rock bottom, or a facet of it. she holds everything in until she explodes. painting is an alarm bell.]
